Ch.10-15 Conflict Analysis

The conflict in the story is the problem that drives the plot.  The conflict always involves the protagonist in some way.  The conflict may be with God, nature, another person, society, or within the character himself.  Daniel's primary conflict is evident in one paragraph at the beginning of Chapter 11 after Simon offers his shop to him.  With whom is Daniel in conflict?  What type of conflict is it?  Explain the details of this conflict.

  1. Daniel is in conflict with himself and with Leah. It is a character vs. self and a character vs. character. Daniel is in conflict with himself because he is having a hard time deciding whether to stay in the village with his sister or go back up in the mountains. That is where the conflict with Leah starts. Leah needs to be taken care of now since their grandmother died, and Daniel is going to have to be the one who does it. But the problem is that she is not very relevant to the people of the village. Because of Leah it makes Daniel’s situation twice as bad, because he has to and wants to stay for Leah, but also wants to go back up in the mountains for his freedom.

  2. Daniel is in conflict with himself. This is a character vs. self conflict. Daniel wants to stay in the village because he doesn’t want to leave Leah all alone. She could never function on her own. He also wants to stay and take over Simon’s blacksmith shop. There, he could earn some money. Daniel also wants to go back to the mountain where he doesn’t really have any responsibilities, and he could also have fun raiding people. Rosh thinks that Daniel has a soft spot in him and that is the reason why he is leaving, but Daniel said that he would prove to him that he would help the fight against the Romans even if he wasn’t with Rosh and all of the others. Daniel hates the Romans. That is why he is trying to fight his soft spot. Daniel knows that there are some untrue things that Rosh says. He wants to change, but because of what the Romans did to his family, Daniel wants to keep fighting the Romans and not have a soft spot.

  3. Daniel is in conflict with Rosh because he can’t leave Leah, but he doesn’t want to leave the mountain either. This is a Character(meaning Daniel) Vs. another person(Rosh). Daniel is kind of trapped because Simon has a whole place set out for him for a how which is Simon’s own home. Daniel is a great blacksmith and works hard at the job too. Rosh keeps telling Daniel that he has a soft spot which doesn’t make Daniel very happy. He is stuck between Rosh and Simon and the town. He has a lot more responsibilities now, but he still has Leah to help.

  4. Daniel is in conflict with himself. It is character vs. self. Daniel is in conflict with himself because he has to make decisions on if he is going to stay in the village and look after Leah or if he is going to go back up to the mountain where his home is and were he belongs. Daniel also has to learn how to show respect to the Romans when they need something to be fixed otherwise he will put the whole town in danger just by something he said or he did.

  5. Daniels conflict is Between hes responsibility and what he wants to do. He wants to stay up on the mountains and attack the roman but he has to take care of hes sister also so it draws a line between him. This type of conflict is character vs self because he could go on the mountain live there and leave his sister to die. But he is trying to do both and he can't unfortunately do that because his sister is scared of almost everyone.

  6. In the beginning of chapter 11 it shows us that Daniel's grandmother dies. This becomes a problem for Daniel because he has nobody to take care of Leah. Daniel wants to take care of Leah because he doesn't just want to leave her to die. This creates a problem for Daniel because then he can't live on the mountain with his band of robbers. Daniel has a conflict with himself (Character vs Self) so he has to earn money by working the as the blacksmith so he can get food for Leah.

  7. Daniel's conflict is with himself because he needs to stay in the village with Leah. He also got a deal from Simon so that he could house Leah and work at the shop all at the same time. But he wants to stay on the mountain and live a free life. But Leah must be taken care of she cant handle herself. And when they get ready to move Leah doesn't want to go because she is afraid of people, so they have to get a car to take Leah to Simon's house.

  8. Daniel is on conflict with himself. Character vs. Character conflict. Daniel wants to saty on the mountain and be with Samson and Rosh and lead the only life he has ever known, but he can't bear to think about what would happen if he left Leah with no one to look after her. He thinks that the only way to defeat the Romans is to stay on the mountains. He wants to prove to Rosh that he can accomplish adult tasks. Daniel is forced to choose, either stay on the mountain, and live that irresponsible life he loves, or take responsibility and take care of Leah while running Simon's shop.

  9. Daniel is kinda at a conflict with Leah and sorta with himself. So it is a Character vs Character and Character vs Self. He is at a conflict with himself because he is having a hard time deciding if he should stay in the village with Leah or in the mountain with Rosh and Samson. He is at Character vs Character because he is now has to take care of Leah since their grandmother died and she isn’t really that applicable with the people in the village. This makes things very hard for Daniel. He wants to help and destroy the Romans at the mountain, but he wants to help out Leah as well. Choices choices.
