Ch. 10-15 Mood Analysis

The mood of a story is the feeling or atmosphere the author creates for the readers.  An author sets the mood through the use of specific words, phrases, or descriptions that have feelings connected to them.  Look back in this section and previous chapters and list two examples from the novel that show a different mood.  How does the mood of the writing reflect the changes in Daniel since the beginning of the novel?

  1. In the beginning of the story Daniel was just an angry kid who had nothing in his heart except for hate for the Romans. But now that he has left the mountain to take over Simon's shop he is starting to live a normal-ish life.

  2. At the beginning of the novel, Daniel had his mind set on one thing and one thing only--to destroy the Romans. That hatred had practically consumed him. His mood was always bad because he was too focused on that. But after his grandmother died recently, we noticed a change in his mood. He is becoming a more respectful man instead of selfish boy. He has responsibilities now. Although he still hates the Romans, he is realizing that that shouldn’t be and isn’t his first priority in life right now. And I think that when he goes back to the freedom of living in the mountains, it changes his mood into wanting to forget about everything that is more important and back to having the urge to destroy the Romans.

  3. The author at the end of chapter 14 says that Daniel is barred up in a cage but earlier in the book he didn't care about what happens in his family but now the responsibility have caught up to him. Another mood is that in this he talks about hammering down the hate for the Romans but earlier in it he book he was ready to get rid of all the Romans now.

  5. When you hear Daniel tell Joel and Thacia about how his family died to can almost feel his pain. And when Daniel is losing his grandmother and telling the story about how happy they used be when his grandma told him bible stories, you could feel how happy he was.

  6. In the beginning of chapter 11 Daniel's grandmother is having her funeral which sets the mood for a sad scene. When he was talking to Joel and Thacia when they were taking the oath it made us readers feel a sense of joy. Daniel's mood in the beginning he was a hot tempered person with a grudge against the Romans but now he really has something to care about.

  7. On page 121, the author says that Daniel felt trapped, but on page 1 it talked about the landscape that Free-Daniel lived in. It also has the general idea of being free, up until he goes back to see his grandmother and Leah.

  8. Page 150,“Curse his selfishness! Couldn’t he have brought her a morsel?” I thought that this was a feeling of selflessness because he ashamed himself for not bringing even a morsel, or a little bit of food, for Leah.
Page 158,“He bent and picked up the jar, and the bars of his cage slid into place around him.” I believe that this quote shows that he is in the cage of Leah because he can’t leave her or else she will die. He wants to go to the mountain but Leah is pulling him back. He has that cage feeling, not his “I free” feeling like he has in the beginning of the book when he is alone and with the gang of men on the mountain.

  9. At the start of the novel, he wasn't the calm Daniel we know now, he was a vengeance filled person, wanting to avenge his parents by killing the Romans. But now since he is taking care of Leah, he is becoming more calm and normal like.

  10. Daniel and the others in the gang raided a caravan and killed most of the people in that caravan that came close to their camp. Also, Daniel used to also steal from other people under Rosh’s command. Daniel would not do that now because he knows that those people are loved by someone and that they didn't do anything to deserve what happened to them. Daniel is also starting to realize that some of the things that Rosh says aren't true. Daniel is starting to resist Rosh which he would never do earlier in his life. This changes the mood of the story for us because Daniel used to be more of a greedy person who didn't care if a life was taken to a more friendly person who thought of life as more of a precious thing.
